Distillation Labware

Distillation is a process used widely in the laboratory or in wider working environments for separating or purifying liquids or liquid mixtures based on the different boiling points of individual components.
Distillation Applications:
• Separation and purification of miscible liquid mixtures in organic chemistry
• Drying of solid residues and/or solvent removal
• Fractional distillation of liquids from polymers and petroleum products
• Removal of particulates or other solid contaminants
• As part of a water purification system for production of distilled water for laboratory use
• Specialist steam distillation-based applications such as Kjeldahl analysis of nitrogen and proteins in food, beverage, or environmental samples
What Types of Distillation Equipment Are Available?
Conventional distillation apparatus, typically comprising individual, jointed borosilicate glassware components assembled by the user (depending upon the application), using appropriate clamps, stands, and supports. Most conventional distillation assemblies combine a round-bottomed distilling flask to contain and heat the liquid(s) that require purification, fitted with a stoppered or jointed neck to which is attached a downward-sloping, inclined side-arm for connection to a condensing unit to cool the heated vapors back down to their liquid state. Heating mantles are the preferred heat source for improved temperature control. These conventional distillation units are also available supplied complete and ready-assembled for added convenience and ease of use.
Specialized automated distillation equipment, notably units designed for the determination of volatile acidity and alcoholic strength by volume in wines, musts, and alcoholic beverages, and units designed for Kjeldahl nitrogen or protein determinations.

Distilling Column, Water Jacketed, 14/20 Joint, 200mm. Jacketed distilling column has indentations on the inner tube to support packing material. The jacket allows the column to be used as a condenser. Column has a top outer and lower inner standard taper joint. Available in joint sizes other than those listed. All sizes have an I.D. of approximately 10mm.

NOTE: The 14/20 size accepts a 1” immersion 7/12 or 10/18 thermometer, while the 24/40 and 29/42 sizes accept a 2” immersion, 10/30 thermometer.

Can be used with ASTM Method D-95 along with similar ASTM methods. The 10mL size has subdivisions of 0.1 from 0 to 2mL, and 0.2 from 2 to 10mL. The 25mL size has subdivisions of 0.1 from 0 to 2mL and 0.2 from 2 to 25mL.

Chemglass Life Sciences Condenser, Friedrichs, 360mm, 45/50 Inner Joint
Condenser, Friedrichs, 360mm, 45/50 Inner Joint. Similar to CG-1210 but with the 24/40 outer joint replaced with a serrated hose connection for use with a drying tube. This style condenser is used primarily in Soxhlet extractions or in reflux mode. Hose connections have an O.D. of 10mm at the middle serration.

Hickman Still Head, Minum-Ware. Unique design of the Hickman still makes it both the collection vessel and condenser for simple fractional distillations. The threaded side port permits easy removal of distillate via a syringe or Pasteur pipette. Side port has a 8-425 thread. Still has an upper threaded outer joint and lower inner joint, both 14/10. Supplied complete with open-top screw cap (MW-102-33) and Viton o-ring (MW-100-08) for 14/10 joint and PTFE faced septa (MW-104-01) and open-top screw cap (MW-102-11) for 8-425 sidearm.
